Before you buy

What should you check before you buy VIP peptide?

Four checks separate full-length VIP from a look-alike listing. Peptara Labs read the reference values below from two PubChem identity records on October 7, 2026.

Length

Full-length VIP has 28 amino acids. Shorter fragments, including VIP (6 to 28), are different molecules. A listing should name the full 1 to 28 chain.

Sequence

Both records give the chain as HSDAVFTDNYTRLRKQMAVKKYLNSILN, one letter per amino acid. It starts with histidine and ends with asparagine.

Formula and weight

The identity records list formula C147H237N43O43S, molecular weight 3326.8 g/mol and CAS 40077-57-4 for VIP. They show the last amino acid as a free acid. A different end form changes the formula and weight, so a certificate should name the form it measured.

Name

PubChem files human VIP under the name aviptadil, the name trials use for synthetic VIP. The two names point to the same 28 amino acid chain.

A published certificate should establish the identity of the batch. These reference facts do not confirm this vial while its certificate is pending.

Certificate

How will the VIP peptide batch certificate be published?

No VIP peptide certificate exists yet, and this page gives no date for one. Peptara Labs posts each released certificate in full on its certificates page. Each one names the lot, the certificate number, the HPLC purity and the month of testing. Until the VIP peptide record appears there, this page states that the batch certificate is pending and makes no purity claim.

No lot number is printed on Peptara Labs vials. The order number is what ties a vial to its batch certificate. The peptide purity guide explains what a certificate can and cannot establish.

The short answer

What is VIP peptide?

VIP is vasoactive intestinal peptide, a 28 amino acid neuropeptide. Researchers first isolated it from hog small intestine in 1970. Later work found it in the central and peripheral nervous system. Both nerve cells and immune cells release it. A 2004 immunology review used the nickname "very important peptide", after its initials.

The science

How does VIP act in research models?

VIP acts mainly through two receptors, VPAC1 and VPAC2. Both also respond to the related peptide PACAP. A third receptor, PAC1, mainly responds to PACAP. VIP belongs to a peptide family that includes secretin, glucagon, GIP and GHRH.

Researchers describe VIP as a nerve signal, an immune regulator and a signal that widens blood vessels and prompts secretion. A 2004 review went further and called it a type 2 cytokine, the label for one group of immune-cell signals. Reviews examine its roles in the brain, including the sleep-wake clock, learning, memory and stress, and outside the brain, including gut function, immune-cell activity, inflammation and insulin release. Those roles explain the research questions, rather than establish a use for this vial.

Research areas

What has VIP peptide been studied in?

Immune signaling

Reviews examine inflammatory signals and how VIP changes immune-cell activity.

Mouse colitis

An animal study measured gut inflammation, disease severity and cytokines, the signals immune cells release.

Lung artery pressure

An eight-patient study examined primary pulmonary hypertension and measured lung artery pressure.

COVID-19 respiratory failure

A 196-patient trial studied aviptadil, synthetic VIP. Its main end point was not met.

PMID 22139413.; Abad et al., 2003, Gastroenterology VIP in a mouse colitis model. PMID 12671893.; Petkov et al., 2003, Journal of Clinical Investigation VIP in primary pulmonary hypertension research. These are different molecules with different evidence. Thymosin alpha-1 matches the length of VIP, but a shared length says nothing about shared activity. The closest relatives of VIP are not on this list: PACAP, secretin, glucagon, GIP and GHRH share its peptide family, and PACAP also acts on its two main receptors. The linked pages keep each research record separate.

Evidence

What did the VIP peptide studies report?

Isolation and animal physiology

The first experiments described widening of blood vessels, lower blood pressure, increased heart output, changes in breathing and higher blood sugar in animals.

Colitis in mice

The authors reported lower disease severity and fewer inflammatory cytokines in mice with TNBS colitis, including when VIP was started after the colitis had begun. An animal finding does not establish a clinical effect.

Eight-patient lung study

The authors found low VIP levels in the blood serum and lung tissue of patients with primary pulmonary hypertension. They reported lower lung artery pressure in this small study and called for further research.

196-patient COVID-19 trial

The trial did not meet its primary end point. A secondary analysis reported better 60-day survival. That finding does not replace the failed main end point.

Synthetic VIP peptide trial ledger, October 7, 2026

The dated aviptadil search recorded 9 studies, all in COVID-19 or related lung failure. A registry entry records study status, not proof that a product works.

What is not known

What is still unknown about VIP peptide?

The cited research does not establish a half-life figure. Much of the work concerns cells and animals. The lung artery study was small, and the larger respiratory failure trial did not meet its main goal. Those limits prevent broad conclusions about safety or clinical effects.
